Happy Thanksgiving
Friends and Colleagues,
Therefore, all of you are at the head of my list of things for which I am most humbly grateful: That I have the honor to serve Germanna, our students, and our communities alongside each of you is a great privilege and thankful duty.
May you celebrate Thanksgiving with those you love, with good memories of those who are no longer at your table, with hope that those who are serving in harm's way return safely and soon to your table, and with warm food and gratitude within.
To those individuals and organizations we work with in our service area: Please accept this simple message of thanksgiving
for your friendships and partnering with Germanna. Without your support, Germanna would have found it difficult to continue effectively serving our students and communities. So many businesses, educational institutions, nonprofits, and governments stepped forward to offer us space and other support after the August earthquake that it is too long a list to write here. So many of you donate time and resources to our Foundation to invest in the good work we do. So many of you serve on our Boards and Advisory Councils.
To those who serve at Germanna, whether part-time or full-time employee, volunteer, board member, or contractor: Thank you for all that you do and have done in spite of the great challenges we have faced. Despite budget cuts, economic uncertainties, earthquakes and hurricanes, you have continued to focus on students and their education and success. Some of you have lost private offices or moved off campus. Some of you have taught using online tools for the first time. Some of you are bunched together in hallways and corners. All of you have faced stress, change, and disruption in small or great degree.

"For in a democracy, every citizen, regardless of his interest in politics, 'hold[s] office'; everyone of us is in a position of responsibility; and, in the final analysis, the kind of government we get depends upon how we fulfill those responsibilities. We, the people, are the boss, and we will get the kind of political leadership, be it good or bad, that we demand and deserve." J F Kennedy

Veterans' Day 2011
When I was young, I vividly remember my mother making a point to buy a poppy for each of us to wear on our clothing for “Reembrance Day,” as she still called November 11. We know it as Veterans’ Day, but she was born November 30, 1918, just nineteen days after the guns fell silent to end the War to End all Wars, and that is what the day was called when she was a child. She always reminded me of 11-11-11 because the Armistice took effect on November 11 at 11 am.
Today is another 11-11-11. And, unhappily, many wars have followed.
Today, beginning at 9 am at both Germanna Community College campuses, students, faculty, staff and community members will read from the roll of those who have died in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. You are welcome to participate:
http://www.germanna.edu/germannahighlights.asp?article=3
Today we also pause to thank our veterans and remember those not here to be thanked. It is the least we can do.
We can also:
- hire a veteran
- retrain a veteran
- assist a veteran in trouble
- pray for those who are serving and have served
or just feel a deep gratitude in our hearts for those who have answered the call and stood their ground so we can live without having to defend ourselves.
The poppies that we wore memorialized the poppy fields in Flanders where many Americans lie instead of having come home. Around the cemetery, many battles were fought in the Ypres region. Heavy fighting over the years of the war cost about a million casualties. The battles were memorialized in a famous poem by a veteran of that war:
Take up our quarrel with the foe:

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
